EQUIPMENT

The right tools are essential  in the pursuit of the paranormal.  IMPI utilizes different equipment  to document each case, from dowsing rods to cameras, thermometers to EMF Detectors.    Each reading, picture and temperature change is important to an investigation for the final analysis and could be a valuable piece of evidence of paranormal activity in the location being studied.  Below is a general list of the equipment we use and it's purpose in the investigation.

  • Digital Voice Recorder  -  Digital recorders are used during each investigation to record all sounds and voices.  They are also used for EVP sessions to capture any responses to questions posed to the entity, if one is present.   In theory, entities communicate on a lower frequency than us, in a range below our hearing.  But these sounds can be picked up on a recorder.
  • Thermometer - thermometers are an important part of any investigation.  A thermometer monitors the ambient air temperature of an area during an investigation.  One theory in paranormal circles is that entity trying to manifest pulls heat from the air while drawing energy leaving cold spots behind.  All instances of cold spots are documented during the investigation on an investigator's log and a natural explanation for the anomaly is searched for.  Its correlated with other instances such as EMF readings or EV P's caught during that time period later discovered during analysis.
  • Electromagnetic field detector - an EMF detector is used during an investigation to detect fluctuations in the electromagnetic field of the area.  Electromagnetic fields do occur naturally, but in small increments such as 0.1 to 0.2 milliGauss.  It has been found that in areas where there is paranormal activity EMF spikes occur.  Also, high EMF readings caused by electrical appliances or unshielded wiring or breaker boxes can be a factor in the perception of paranormal activity.  In other words, people that have EMF sensitivity can experience paranoia, nausea, feelings of dread and hallucinations.  This can be solved by an electrician properly shielding the outlets or boxes.
  • 35 MM cameras - a 35 MM camera is also used along with the digital camera.  There are some theories that 35 MM cameras are more accurate in paranormal investigation due to the fact that they do not adjust or enhance the photos taken in any way.  Digital cameras are designed to take a sharp clear pictures using electronic enhancement.  35 MM cameras do not use this.  Also it is much more difficult to tamper with a 35 MM picture without detection than it is with a digital picture.
  • Compass - this is a simple but effective tool in paranormal investigation.  As with the EMF detector, a compass works by detecting magnetic fields.  When a compass meets a disruption in magnetic fields, it tends to spin, thus leading investigators two employee other equipment in that area in an effort to capture paranormal evidence.
  • Dowsing rods - used for many years to find such things as water,  investigators use Dowsing rods to detect paranormal anomalies.  It is believed that dowsing rods detect fluctuations in energy.  Once again this gives investigators in indication that it is time to deploy other equipment.

This is just a sampling of the equipment IMPI currently uses.  All of the information collected from these tools is analyzed at the end of each investigation and compiled in detailed reports.  It is then reviewed by the entire IMPI team and a final opinion is formulated as to the activity documented and whether the location shows true paranormal activity.  The group also debates whether the location requires further investigation before a definitive decision can be reached or if the location is in IMPI's opinion haunted.

Once all of this information is analyze and reviewed, the report written and any follow-up investigation (debunking) performed, IMPI members sit down with the owner or manager of the property to reveal the evidence captured.  A copy of all evidence is then given to the property owner for their own records.  At that time IMPI then gives any suggestions or support needed to the client in order for them to be more comfortable in their location, whether it be a private residence or place of business.
